What is Self-Love?

Hand holding book with 'Love Yourself' and 'Be You' on it

Self-love. We hear this phrase a lot, don’t we? What does it really mean? Looking in the mirror and calling ourselves beautiful? Maybe. However, I think it runs much deeper than that.

Self-love is taking care of yourself. Doing what you need to do to depend on yourself and no one else. Seeking internal validation rather than external. There was once a photographer who validated each of his customers. When he lost his job, his customers lost their smiles. Why? Because their validation came from the photographer – it was external, not internal.

Self-love is doing things you love. In my case, it’s writing and watching Alpha Content grow. I love going to the gym at stupid hours in the morning. I love hiking. I love dogs. I love cuddling on the sofa while everyone is out around the town. Give me a cup of tea over a beer any day.

Self-love is us doing us, and no one else. Living our lives for ourselves. Living our lives the way we want to. Not the way society tells us to. Not the way our friends, family, life partners tell us to. At the end of the day, someone will always have something to say about what you’re doing, so why bother?

Self-love is being who you are. Letting your personality shine through regardless of what others may think. Letting go of that fear that suppresses your true self and allowing your soul to run free. Experiencing your emotions – the good, the bad, and the ugly. Living through them and learning from them.

Self-love is eating good food. They say you are what you eat, and that is so true. Take care of yourself by giving yourself nutritious food that will boost your energy levels and make you feel better about yourself. Of course, without depriving ourselves of anything – those tasty chocolates (in moderation) are important too!

Self-love is listening to your body. So, you don’t feel like going out? Stay home. Do you feel like being alone? Be alone. Do you feel like sleeping all day? Then do it. Do you feel like going for a long run? Get up and go. Your body knows what it needs, so listen to it. Feeling inspired? Embrace it.

Self-love is accepting that no two people are the same. What you need or want may not be what someone else needs or wants. Don’t ever feel like you need to match someone else’s achievements or goals. Don’t ever compare yourself to anyone else. You are perfect just the way you are.

Self-love is investing in yourself, which is what I have done with Alpha Content. This word factory is based on all of the above and more. Self-love is being grateful for our achievements, and I am eternally grateful for mine.
